Old Red Faculty Lounge
Galveston, Texas
The Ashbel Smith Building, or “Old Red” was completed in 1890 as the home of the University of Texas Medical Department, now known as UTMB. As the oldest medical school building in Texas, Old Red is recognized as a historical building by the National Register of Historic Places and the Texas Historical Commission.
In November of 2005, Old Red added a faculty lounge area with on-site food service and reparation amenities, seating areas, and wireless networking capabilities. ATI provided MEP programming and design for the faculty lounge, and performed detailed surveys of the existing building and the associated systems. ATI worked closely with the architect, Turner Partners Architecture, LP and historical preservation consultants to coordinate and integrate the new MEP systems while preserving the existing architecture of the building.
The project scope included various life safety upgrades throughout the building, and the replacement of the building management system with a state-of-the-art DDC system.
